Smart Water Starts with You! is a fun and interactive resource for teachers of year 5-8 students. Use this programme to teach your students where their water comes from, why it is one of our most important resources and how to use it smarter.
The package is designed so you can use the whole unit, or, if you are short on time you can pick and choose activities from the term plan.
Read more information on the unit's structure, content and curriculum links and the term planner.
Students will understand water is a precious resource (taonga) that we all must look after. Students explore their knowledge about water and how they use water in their daily lives. International case studies of children demonstrate how others around the world use water. Students will become motivated to learn about water conservation.
Water is a precious Taonga
Our life with water
Students will understand how water gets from the source to our taps. Information about the various water sources for Hamilton City Council, Waikato District Council and Waipā District Council are outlined. The importance of water is viewed through the lens of a natural disaster.
This section examines the water treatment process from the intake of untreated water at the source, through the water treatment plant, to the clean healthy water that comes out of your tap.
Check out the video, it takes you on a hosted tour of your local water treatment plant, putting images to the process and can support learning in this section.

Students will understand how much water NZ uses and how much we use at home. Students measure how much water is used at school on a daily basis and explore how it is used. Future challenges to water supply are considered. Ways to be sustainable with our water are introduced.
Students are provided with an opportunity to use their new knowledge and understanding to make informed decisions about how they use water. Students identify the priorities for change and organise action for the environment to reduce their use of water. Students will recognise how their actions contribute to a sustainable future.
"Smart Water Starts With You!” explores the issues of water – from water conservation, water treatment and environmental action. It guides you through the teaching process and provides fun and interactive ways to engage your class to be smart with water.
The unit covers the curriculum areas of Science, Social Science, Health and Technology. Mathematics and English objectives are also included in many activities. The resource can be taught throughout your timetable and over several subject areas; e.g. section five contains many mathematics objectives and could be delivered during your math class time.
If you are limited on time you can pick and choose a few activities to teach from the term plan. But for the full benefit we recommend you teach the whole resource.
