It's United Nations World Water Day March 22nd. This year's theme is 'Water for peace'
Restrictions were lifted across the district on 20 March except for in Te Awamutu and Pirongia. The two towns remained on Water Alert Level 3 which meant sprinklers were banned.
Recent rain has meant the water in the Mangauika Stream on Mount Pirongia has increased, however Waipa District Council’s Water Service Manager Lorraine Kendrick says they will be monitoring the stream’s flow closely as it is still low.
“Rain is predicted this week but if we don’t get enough rain falling on Mount Pirongia, we may need to consider restrictions again,” says Ms Kendrick.
“We’d like Te Awamutu and Pirongia residents to continue to conserve water where possible whilst the stream remains in a low flow. We thank them for the great job they’ve been doing in response to our Smart Water messages.”
Waipa staff will continue to assess water levels and weather forecasts over the next few weeks with the hope the Mangauika Stream reaches a steady flow.
The Smart Water Starts with You! sub-regional summer campaign aims to make long-term change to how we use water and is a joint venture between Waikato District Council, Hamilton City Council, and Waipa District Council.
